FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

Q: Can I heat passivate/hot kill with the flow meter hooked up inline?

  • A: Yes, the IFM SM8120 Flow meter is rated for an internal ambient temperature of 100°C (212°F) before it safely shuts off the display. This does not mean the meter is damaged. It is just a safety feature until the internal temperature reaches 60°C(140°F). The SM8120 will also record the total flow of media up to 194°F. The temperature display will display the temperature of the media, but not record the total up to 112°C (233.6°F) for a short period of time before the internal temperature reaches 100°C (212°F)

Q: If I place my portable flow meter down stream from the oxygen stone during knockout, will that throw off my end total (totalizer).

  • A: Yes, but by .3%. This percentage also depends on the size of bubbles from your aeration stone. Larger bubbles will flow past the sensor and detection point causing inaccurate readings. If you have a steady “wet foam” (smaller bubbles), the differential will be minimal. Double check what micron of oxygen stone you have installed, this can make a difference in bubble size. We do recommend running some trials for yourself by flowing a known amount of water through the meter. We recommend using one of our yeast brinks and filling it with water through the flow meter. Then during a brew day, if you have some spare wort at the end, fill the same brink with oxygenated wort until full. Water will of course fill the brink with all liquid whereas the wort will have foam come out first. Stop the test once foam comes out, let the foam settle and record your measurements. Or dose the brink with anti-foam and allow it to fill with liquid.

Q: Does the SM8120 Mag Meter work with Reverse Osmosis(RO) Water?

  • A: Yes and No. If filtering your water down under 12.5PPM TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) or 20µs/cm (microsiemens/conductivity) then the flow meter will no longer register the conductivity of the liquid and you will show 0GPM and the totalizer will not change. A properly functioning RO unit will produce water with a TDS level of less than 50PPM (80µs/cm) or lower.

Q: Is the flow meter Sanitary?

  • A: Yes it is! The 1.5” Tri clamp G1 Threaded adapters are sealed with a flush EPDM gasket. There are no exposed threads making this a sanitary environment. All parts wetted and non wetted are made of 316 Stainless.

Q: What type of media/liquid can I use the flow meter for?

  • A: The portable flow meter can be used for multiple processes and can accurately measure multiple types of media/liquids. This can be used for:

      • wort transfer from your brewhouse heat exchanger into your fermenting vessel

      • cone to cone yeast pitching/yeast transfer or transfer of yeast from your fermenter into a yeast brink

      • liquoring back high gravity wort to achieve a lower gravity and higher volume

      • blending barrel aged beer

      • blending fruit puree or juices into seltzer base or sour base

      • accurately measuring CIP water

      • Transfer from Fermenter to Brite tank

      • Transfer from Fermenter or Brite Tank to packaging line

      • Transfer from Fermenter into Kegs

These are all different methods that customers who have purchased a Craftmaster Stainless Portable flow meter have done in the past. There are so many other things you can do with this meter. Call one of us today to chat!
